Student Demographic
Welcome to Ms. Grossi and Ms. Greco’s grade 6 class at St. Christina Natalie Elementary School. This grade six class contains twenty-four students with 14 female and 10 male students. The students are dedicated, studious and eager to learn about interesting concepts.
Location
St. Christina Natalie Elementary School is located in a middle to upper class suburban community in Toronto, Ontario. The school is located in the middle of the neighbourhood. There are a variety of homes surrounding the school, some of which include detached, semi-detached and town homes. There are many parks in the surrounding area. Families in this neighbourhood are highly involved with the school and offer a diverse and multicultural aspect to the school’s community, environment and events.
About the Students
The students in our class are very eager to learn and enjoy class discussions where they can offer their own opinions and knowledge about concepts. Academic achievement throughout the class is relatively average to high. The students enjoy collaborative group work as well as hands-on activities.
The primary language of all students in the class is English. They have a good vocabulary for their grade level.
There is one child, Child A, who has an IEP for accommodations only and has attention difficulties and a behavioural issue. For this child, it is imperative that he be kept busy and allowed to move around as much as possible so as to avoid disruptions or outbursts. It has been noted that he enjoys sitting close to the teachers while they are teaching. For this reason, we allow him to sit close to them when they are teaching. We also find that involving him as much as possible in the teaching process allows him to stay on task and stay engaged in the lesson. For this reason, we allow him to hand out worksheets or hold up objects or materials when conducting experiments. The child works with an Educational Assistant (EA) for various periods. It is beneficial for the child to work closely with the EA as well as work collaboratively with his peers. When there is group work, we encourage the EA to help all students in the group, not just Child A, so that he does not feel different and left out from the rest of the class. Class acceptance is prominent for him, so we would like to encourage positive interactions throughout. The EA provides assistance to the child. He enjoys working with technology and dislikes writing himself, so we encourage him to electronically write his answers and assignments on his personal laptop, provided by his parents. The EA may also scribe for him at times, but she is to write verbatim from what he tells her to ensure the work he hands into the teacher is truly his own and can be assessed accordingly. Extra time for completion of in class work is provided to him when needed.
There are two children with hearing impairments as well as two children with visual impairments who both wear glasses. These students sit at the front of the classroom. We speak loudly when teaching, use expression, speak clearly, and repeat questions, answers, and instructions as required.
The students are interested in their academics but also enjoy extracurricular activities. They enjoy working together and are encouraging to each other. In our class, we promote a friendly and respectful environment for all to ensure a humble classroom where learning and friendship is encouraged.
